History tells that when Maysville was still a part of Old Bourbon County, Virginia, ‘Bourbon whiskey’ was stamped on the barrels spirits before being shipped off down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans. The term ‘Bourbon whiskey’ is believed to have been coined in Maysville.
“There is no question in my mind that for the first century of bourbon’s history in Kentucky that Maysville was right in the forefront of it,” according to John Stanton, Kenton County External Affairs Director.
A stop on the B-Line, Maysville’s Old Pogue Distillery has a history dating back to the years following the Civil War. In 1876, the original Pogue distillery, Kentucky registered distillery No. 3, was established in Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky, very near a site often said to be the location of Kentucky’s first bourbon distillery.
When visiting Pogue Distillery in Maysville, be sure to also check out the Old Pogue Experience at the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center, also located in Maysville, Ky.
Caproni's on the River became a stop on the B-Line in 2023, but it has a long history in Maysville. Caproni's specializes in traditional Italian fare and Kentucky classics, and the bar carries an impressive bourbon selection. Kenton Stories with Spirit, deSha’s Restaurant, O’Rourke’s Pub, and Crowe Bar, also offer a wide variety of bourbons.
The B-Line consists of five Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour® distilleries, six bourbon bars, and eight bourbon-centric restaurants. Participants can collect stamps from stops on The B-Line to claim prizes including t-shirts, hats, whiskey stones, and more.

716 West Second Street Distillery is on the same grounds where the historic H.E. Pogue Distillery was located.
Tours of the distillery and historic Pogue house last one hour and are scheduled in advance for a more personal experience.Available Wednesday through Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
